Decompress a zip or 7z asset

When you upload a file with the extension zip or 7z as an asset and decompress it, you can check the files inside the zip or 7z in the CMS.

The decompressed files inside do not become assets; what is handled as an asset is the zip or 7z file. The steps for uploading, downloading, and deleting the zip or 7z asset are in Manage assets.

With the files inside the zip or 7z, what you can do is show a preview and get a URL for each file.

To show a file inside the zip or 7z in the preview, choose the asset’s Asset Type. The steps are in Preview an asset.

There are two ways to decompress: doing it at upload time, and doing it after uploading.

Owner, Maintainer, and Writer can decompress. Reader can view the files inside a decompressed asset.

Decompress at upload time

Uploads a zip or 7z file and decompresses it in the same operation.

1. On the Asset screen, click Upload Asset.
2. On the Local tab, select a zip or 7z file, or on the URL tab, enter the URL of a zip or 7z file.
3. Confirm that Auto Unzip is checked.
4. Click Upload.

The Auto Unzip checkbox appears when the extension of the file you selected or the URL you entered is zip or 7z. The checkbox is checked by default.

Decompress after uploading

Decompresses an asset that was uploaded with Auto Unzip cleared.

1. In the list on the Asset screen, confirm that the value in the Status column of the asset you are decompressing is Skipped.
2. Click the edit icon in that asset’s row. The detail screen opens.
3. Click Unzip.

The Unzip button appears only when Status is Skipped. The list of Status values and their meanings is in Asset.

When decompression ends partway, Status becomes Failed. To check the files inside, upload the same file once more.

Get the URL of a file inside the zip or 7z

For a decompressed zip or 7z asset, gets the URL of each single file inside it. This URL is separate from the URL of the zip or 7z asset itself.

1. In the list on the Asset screen, click the edit icon in the row of the zip or 7z asset you are working with. The detail screen opens.
2. In the list of files inside, click the name of the file whose URL you are getting.
3. Click Copy URL, which appears in the row of the file you chose. That file’s URL is copied to your machine.

In the list of files inside, the files are lined up with their folder hierarchy intact.

The list of files inside appears only for assets with the extension zip or 7z.
